Dust Be Gone: Some tips to DIY your IAQ

January 11, 2021

Last month we talked about the importance of your home’s Indoor Air Quality (or, IAQ). There’s no better time than today, to address the cleanliness and efficiency of your HVAC system, to keep you and your family healthy in the cooler temperatures approaching. We at Craig’s can help identify IAQ problem sources (pollen, mold, bacteria, viruses, and countless other airborne particulates) to determine the best indoor air quality solution for you. In the meantime, let’s talk about what you can do today to set the stage for improved IAQ. Because it’s not just enough to stay cozy this Fall and Winter season, you want to stay healthy, too! Let’s start with DUST.

Suck It Up

Dust is home to the microscopic mites bearing its name (which happen to be microscopic cousins of the spider) as well as many other unhealthy particulates. Reduce this source of lung irritation by dusting and vacuuming once a week with a sealed vacuum that features a HEPA filter.

De-Humidify

For optimal IAQ, and a dust-free environment, keep your humidity between 35-50 percent using a dehumidifier or your own HVAC system (just make sure the ducts are clean.) A professional HVAC Duct-Cleaning will keep your units running efficiently and smoothly, too. Bonus: Those mites we were just talking about can’t survive in dry climates.

Sleep Well

Doctors all agree that getting enough sleep is important to staying healthy. You’ll rest better knowing you and your loved ones are protected from dust mites by covering your mattress and pillows with allergen impermeable covers. Launder bedding once a week in hot water (according to medicinenet.com 130-140 degrees is optimal) and thoroughly vacuum the space at the same time.

Go Bare

As cozy as it is, carpet attracts and traps more dust than a bare floor.

If you can, replace wall to wall carpeting with bare floors.

The Right Kind of Damp

When you dust, do it with a damp cloth. Dry dusters stir up more dust than they trap.

In Conclusion

Mayo Clinic research attributes 93% of Chronic Sinus Infections to mold which can actually grown in our sinus cavities and lungs. Get rid of this and other airborne agitators by taming your dust and having Craig’s come out for an analysis of your home’s IAQ.  Solutions such as a Whole Air Home Purification System or an Air Duct Cleaning Service will bring you cleaner air and better HVAC system efficiency so you can head into Fall with less dust, and more fresh air to be thankful for!
